It's 6 a.m. The blare of your alarm jolts you awake, rubbing your eyes after a night disrupted by the cacophony of traffic and your housemate's thunderous snoring. You glance out the window, greeted by a surprising sight—the sun peeking through the clouds. “Finally," you mutter, reaching for a light skirt and top; after all, it is spring. However, as you lace up your shoes and step outside, the sky quickly transforms, clouds gathering ominously, and the first drops of rain begin to fall. “Delightful,” you mutter sarcastically, resigned to the whims of the weather gods.
You dash to the tube station, futilely attempting to shield your freshly washed hair from the rain with your hands, hoping to prevent it from frizzing. Arriving at the station soaked (regretfully leaving your newly purchased umbrella at home), you're met by a sea of dreary commuters, clutching their coffee cups tightly as they stare off into the distance.
Upon catching your breath, you disembark at your stop and head to work, making a detour to a coffee chain. Spending nearly five pounds on a coffee that tastes disappointingly sour and burnt, you try to sip it while dodging raindrops on your final approach to work, silently musing, "Move to London, they said. It'll be fun, they said."
It's no wonder then, as I pen this, that most people I encounter question, "Why move to London?" And truth be told, they have a point. Why exchange the sunny shores and blissful warmth of Australia for the often dreary, cloud-covered days of London? While I can't speak for all Australians who make the leap to London, I can offer insight into why this city became my chosen destination to begin a new life.
Access to a World of Travel: London serves as a gateway to Europe. In my former life in the mid-west of Western Australia, an eight-hour drive back home meant witnessing only slight changes in scenery. Yet, in the same span of time in London, one can traverse four different countries by car, or jet off to destinations like Egypt, America, or Canada within hours. While I cherish Australia's vast expanses, London offers unparalleled travel opportunities. Sure, a flight to Bali might cost a mere hundred dollars roundtrip, but here in London, international flights can be snagged for as little as nine pounds. You could bask on the sandy shores of Spain on Sunday and be back in the office by Monday for the same price as a fancy Starbuck's coffee.
Endless Opportunities: In London, every day holds the promise of adventure, even on the most ordinary of afternoons. With a plethora of activities catering to every taste and preference, the city pulsates with energy and excitement. Whether it's indulging in quirky experiences like yoga with kittens, a hot tub tour along the waterways, or embracing the unconventional by dancing in an IKEA warehouse, London offers a vibrant tapestry of possibilities waiting to be explored.
Thirst for Adventure: It's mind-boggling to consider the sheer magnitude of London's population – over 9 million souls pulsating through its streets. That's more than the entire combined population of Western Australia and Queensland. Yet, amidst the tranquility of rural Australia, where kookaburras serenade the sunset and neighbours are kilometres apart, a longing stirred within me. As a twenty-something single girl, I've savoured the quiet simplicity of country living. But a restless energy took hold, propelling me toward the hustle and bustle of a big, beautiful city. London beckons with its promises of new experiences, diverse cultures, and a way of life vastly different from what I've ever known. The allure of urban exploration tugged at my heartstrings, urging me to immerse myself in the vibrant tapestry of city life. There's a craving to meet people from all walks of life, to soak in the rhythm of the streets, and to seize every opportunity that comes my way. Before the time comes to settle down, I yearn to taste the myriad flavours of life that only a city like London can offer. I stand on the cusp of a new adventure, happy to trade the solitude of rural landscapes for the electric pulse of city streets. It's a leap into the unknown, but one that promises boundless opportunities for growth, discovery, and perhaps a touch of urban magic.
Independence and Embracing the Unknown: In life, there are few moments as liberating as stepping into the unknown, shedding the familiar to embrace a new beginning. Arriving in London with nothing but a baby blue suitcase and a heart full of anticipation, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery and independence. As I settled into my temporary Airbnb, I felt the weight of solitude mingle with the thrill of possibility. This was different from anything I'd experienced before. Yet, with each challenge conquered, I found strength I never knew I possessed. Alone but undaunted, I embrace the hustle and bustle of city life, ready to seize every opportunity that comes my way. In the heartbeat of London, I find not only independence but also the courage to soar beyond the confines of my comfort zone.
To sum up today’s post, while the weather in London may often be wet and cold, the city itself offers a wealth of new experiences and opportunities for personal growth. While my heart may ultimately lead me back to rural Western Australia, where I envision a future with my family and a porch overlooking kangaroo-filled fields, for now, I'm embracing the adventure of city life. London represents a chapter of exploration, where I'm determined to immerse myself fully in all that life has to offer, embracing both the highs and lows along the way. After all, Australia will always be waiting for me, but for now, London is where my journey of discovery unfolds.
