Six Weeks, Six Countries: Highlights from an Epic European Summer

It’s been a while since I last wrote a blog, as I’ve been deeply immersed in another writing project. But today, I felt compelled to share some of my favourite moments from my recent European summer holiday. I feel incredibly fortunate to have spent six weeks travelling with friends, exploring new countries, and creating unforgettable memories. So, here are some of the highlights from each destination on our adventure.

Greece

Greece was nothing short of magical and easily my favourite country among all those I visited in Europe. What struck me most was how much the country has to offer within such a small geographic area. One evening, we were sipping cocktails, savouring gyros, and watching the sun set over the Aegean Sea in Santorini. The very next day, we were off-roading across Milos Island, catching the sunrise at the surreal "Moon Beach," cliff jumping, and sailing around to explore the different sea caves and volcanic rock formations. And, of course, Greece's abundant feline population added to the charm—much to my friends' amusement (and slight annoyance), I couldn’t resist stopping to greet every cat we encountered. I am already thinking of planning my next trip to Greece, with over 50 more islands to explore.

Cyprus

Our next destination was Cyprus, a place I knew little about and had no idea what to expect. To my surprise, it felt like a worn-down Los Angeles, but with stunning beaches that took my breath away. The island is famous for its vibrant nightlife, and we fully embraced it—getting more than a little tipsy (slight understatement) on rum and dancing the night away.

Beyond the beaches and nightlife, Cyprus has a complex and intriguing history, particularly the division between the Greek Cypriot south and the Turkish-occupied north. We learned that the island has been split since 1974, with a United Nations buffer zone separating the two regions. During our stay, we had a rather eye-opening experience involving an unintentional—and technically illegal—border crossing on our way to Turkey.

Turkey

Turkey was our next destination and the one I was most excited about. Although we only visited Istanbul, the city left a lasting impression on me. Istanbul is a vibrant mosaic of life, flavour, and colour, and it truly lived up to its reputation. The streets were bustling with energy, and despite the constant activity, I felt remarkably safe exploring this city. We indulged in delicious pide, baklava, and a variety of mouthwatering meat dishes. The mosques in Istanbul were stunning, embellished with exquisite Iznik tiles and stained glass windows. I often found myself lost in thought, completely mesmerised by the intricate designs and the serene atmosphere they created. And, of course, the city’s abundance of cats added to its charm (yes, I am a crazy cat lady).

Slovenia

Our next stop was Slovenia, where we spent our first two nights in Ljubljana (a name I still can’t pronounce quite right). I loved this charming city, because it felt more like a village than a capital. Strolling through its riverside streets, we were surrounded by cosy terrace restaurants, lively markets, and the glorious sight of the Ljubljana Castle perched above. I felt like I had stepped into a fairytale. We then took a cable car and ski lift to Velika Planina, a little village in the mountains, where we walked among wildflowers, cows and rolling meadows.

But as enchanting as Ljubljana was, it was Lake Bled that stole my heart. One of my most cherished memories is when Abbey, Eleanor, Isaac, and I rented a rowboat and drifted around the island at the lake’s centre. The colour of the water can only be described as a surreal mix of sapphire and topaz. Diving into its depths from the boat, surrounded by the mountains and forest, was an experience I can only describe as utterly magical.

Portugal

Our next destination was Portugal, and oh my, I absolutely adored Lisbon. This city, perched on a steep slope that cascades down to the ocean, is a blend of old-world charm and vibrant energy. Adorable old-fashioned trams clatter through the narrow, winding streets, offering a unique way to explore the city's many hills. Each turn seemed to reveal something new—a hidden café, a colourful tiled façade, or a breathtaking view of the Atlantic. And then there were the pastéis de nata’s—those heavenly custard tarts that quickly became my go-to breakfast (no shame).

Spain

Our final summer destination was Spain, where we spent our time in Barcelona, a city that truly comes alive after dark. We were entranced by traditional flamenco performances, which captured the passionate spirit of Spanish culture. We also indulged in an abundance of sangria—perhaps a bit too much—while soaking up the atmosphere of the city. By day, we wandered through Barcelona’s stunning architecture, marvelling at Gaudí’s imaginative masterpieces, like the Sagrada Família and Casa Batlló and exploring the labyrinthine streets of the Gothic Quarter.

After travelling to six new countries this summer, I’ve come away with invaluable lessons and experiences. Despite being now entirely broke from my travels and living in London—one of the world’s most expensive cities—I wouldn’t change a thing. Reflecting on the precious memories from these past six weeks, I’ve never felt so alive. Travelling evokes a full spectrum of emotions: the exhaustion of 2am flights, the awe of breathtaking views, and the mix of frustration, overwhelm, and even fear that accompanies travel.

Over the past eight months living abroad in London, I feel like I’ve grown and learned more about myself and the world than I did during six years of routine back home. Although a part of me longs for stability and misses my family, this year in London has been a turning point in my life. So, in conclusion, if you’re contemplating a trip to Europe—or anywhere in the world—just go for it. Money can be earned back, but time is irreplaceable. Life is a precious gift, so seize the opportunity to explore and experience all that it has to offer.

Until next time,

A x
